FusionFall Retro Discussion / Re: An Absolute Betrayal...
« on: January 28, 2019, 06:42:36 PM »
Again, a lot of people here seem to be missing the point: "The Unknown" is a series of mostly barren test areas that were accidentally left in the game by the original developers. They could be accessed by bypassing the invisible walls that surround the game world and were not intended to be seen by players of the game. The original game's developers did everything in their power to keep people from getting to it, but a number of factors kept them from being able to devote their full attention to resolving the issue. We've successfully done what they intended to do from the start, which is make the unknown inaccessible to players, as it is not a part of the FusionFall world.

A couple other key points just to clear up some stuff in no particular order:
  • The "New Chat" was created by the original development team with the intention of eventually replacing the old one, but they never finished it. We've simply taken up the task of getting it to function properly, and it's still very much a work in progress.

  • To briefly touch on the subject, FusionFall Legacy, at this point in development, is shaping up to be a totally different 'genre' of game. It was never intended to be "Retro but with updates and new content". There's a very, very good chance that if you like the way Retro plays, you might not like Legacy, and vice versa.

  • Having studied the number of active players throughout the game's life so far, I can confidently say that if Retro didn't receive constant events and content updates, the number of people currently playing FusionFall Retro would be significantly less than even 1/4th of what it is right now.

  • Absolutely nobody on the development team is interested in creating an offline version of FusionFall: It would require significantly more work than creating Retro, and removes the single most important aspect of the game's design: other players. If there comes a time when we are no longer able to host FusionFall Retro, we will most likely reconsider this, but for now our time and effort are better placed elsewhere.

  • The reason the unknown wasn't patched out earlier is because we had things higher up on the priority list, but it had gotten to the point where dealing with the mess that comes with the unknown was actively hurting development of new content and adding features from the original that have not yet been implemented into Retro.

  • While not currently on the table, it's worth noting that FusionFall has the peculiar case of having a limited amount of real estate for areas, with no room for anything else. If we were to do significant additions to the game world as part of an update, we would've had to bulldoze through a majority of the unknown areas that aren't reserved for Fusion Lairs.

  • Even WITH a recent issue that is causing players to crash more frequently -- (Don't worry, we're working on a fix!) -- FusionFall Retro is still significantly more stable than the original game ever was. By the logic of people who think the unknown should stay, should we also have refrained from making the game playable on modern hardware?

  • All of FusionFall's unknown was sufficiently documented online if people are curious, and there was literally nothing out there left to discover. The only way to get to the unknown in FusionFall Retro is by hacking or exploiting the game, both of which are against the terms of service that you agree to by signing up to play.

Now this is a way proper way to tell why it got removed!
Thanks alot for these important details and points.
I thought legacy's programming team is focussing so hard to mimic its mechanics and physics though.
The only reason for offline to be useful is for when you dont have internet or if fusionfall universe as a whole got cancelled. Its a good thing it will be reconsidered later when it is needed.
Since when is the dev team against exploits that are built in the game system and or not possible to be fixed? You got a whole point on not reporting etc but if its built in the game then it is here to stay and it will keep happen. (Unless there is a certain rule made for that.)
Like I said, some of the new features weren't intended by the og dev team either, take guide items for an instance. I have to admit its really useful but it wasn't intended by them either.
Here is a great tip, recruit people that have skill and talent to keep retro alive and in the meanwhile have the other devs focus more on legacy. I mean yeah some devs are better with something than the other, but that's why the team should search for people who can keep this stuff up. This way legacy's release would be way closer than we realize.
Modern hardware would be a fun little extra if the game ever did get an offline mode for some reason, it obviously wouldn't be official but it could work with some homebrew and unity knowledge.
Yeah everything of the unknown is documented, that was also the same with fusionfall before retro got released. Idk if this just turned around the table for the whole game, but anyways.
Again, thank you for taking your time and effort on making a professional and proper reply to this rant. This thread shouldn't be locked at all, let us just discuss some more if we missed any unclear points.

And about the single player thing, that's a very sensible response we got from them.

While most of us have the internet and Fusionfall Retro remains online, FFR single player doesn't make a whole lot of sense for them to go through the trouble of creating. But if there came a time when the owners of this website were in financial trouble, got cease and desist notifications from Turner or whatever, then it becomes an issue.

Adding to that, if the worst happened and they did create a single player version of FFR
I'd say it would make sense to add in local/LAN multiplayer for people who wanted to play this over a private network with friends, or online with a limited number of friends, like 8 to 32 with a list of system requirements of what it would take to host X amount of people reliably.

and they could host it on archive.org or this website if they chose to.
But for the time being there's no need for us to worry. It looks like Fusionfall Retro as an MMO will survive for several years, although there's no guarantees.

1. They are, for the most part, the same people working on both games.

2. Legacy is basically the ultimate FusionFall with new graphical updates, Nanos, items, features, and more.

3. Retro is not going to differ that much from the original game besides patches, glitches, and a certain extent of new content.

If Fusionfall Retro gets new content
in my opinion, it should only be to do with the "cancelled expansions" somebody else mentioned.

Anything more added on after that
and it no longer is Fusionfall Retro
it becomes Fusionfall Plus, or something like that.

It's not the end of the world. :)

and you have a working computer still by the looks of it
is that the same one you used to play Fusionfall?

if it's Windows based then it most likely is
because it doesn't take a high end machine to play this game.

even an Intel NUC would do it.

Well that explains a lot, cheers.

I have a better idea. Locking this tread before it turns into an argument.

No, the community deserves an explanation on what even the Unknown is, plus, I'm not giving up hope of my dream to explore.

It might have been a placeholder for an expansion to be added on, for all we know. But again I'm only guessing the possibilities. I do not have inside information on the development of Fusionfall as I had nothing to do with it, only Womayhem or the others involved in its development would be able to confirm it.

Off Topic / Re: Favorite Dragonball Character?
« on: January 28, 2019, 05:24:59 PM »
My favorite is Goku. He's the character that inspired me to start working out and take martial arts classes.

Goku has done a lot of questionable things though, which seem to contradict the idea of him supposedly having a "pure heart"

1) He let Vegeta live after the guy threatened to blow up the planet and commit genocide, which was a big risk just for the sport of being able to fight him again.

2) During the Cell arc, he gave Cell a senzu bean, just to "even the odds" of him fighting his son Gohan, which again could have ended in catastrophe and almost did, had Gohan not snapped and transformed into a super saiyajin 2, Cell would've had his way and Earth would've been finished, at that point only Beerus or other god tier characters would've been able to put a stop to him, because there would've been nobody left to free Majin Buu.

3) He refused to do fusion with Vegeta during the fight with Kid Buu, because the thrill of the challenge was more important to him than saving the universe from Armageddon.

Goku may be a protagonist, but pure heart? that's debatable.
There are other fictional heroes who wouldn't have taken the kinds of insane risks he did just for the glory of fighting someone.

Idea: Make Debug Land an infected zone you can warp to from like the Nuclear Plant. Set up those huge infected zone walls to prevent people from jumping out. Everything else outside of Debug Land is forbidden.

Or how about turning it into something useful, like a Fusionfall Retro expansion with more missions and characters?
Maybe that's asking for too much

Idea #2
Personal bases, like what you can buy with in game currency in DC Universe Online.
I'd much rather these ideas be reserved for Fusionfall Legacy however.

Yikes, Unpatching a glitch because some people like it is not how anything should be dealt with, not gonna argue much since most good and valuable arguments against this have been said over and over but... "aN abSoLutE beTrAyaL!11!! yOu'Re RuIninG thE GAme!"
(facepalm) ::)

the unknown is boring and mostly overrated and if the original developers got rid of it earlier while the game was up back in like 2009 we'd all be absolutely fine with it, it's for the better now, IF the Universe devs never removed the unknown on Retro, people who spent time in the unknown would complain about Legacy's apparent lack of "glitches" and probably divide everything into a mess?

It's just confusing and unnecessary to ask for the unknown, it's sad to see someone so enraged and overreacted over a not-feature from FusionFall. There will always be people like that on a community, we'll get over it, for the better
His opinion is valid though. I just don't want the Retro section to turn back into a toxic cesspool where everybody's at each other's throats.

I don't really care for the unknown either, even if I had gotten far enough into the game to discover it, going out the map in games isn't all what it's cracked up to be and can be frustrating if you get stuck.

going out of bounds just so I enter a realm where in game physics may fail and drop me into a bottomless pit, (like I've experienced accidentally in other video games), is what I would call, a waste of time.

The reality is it isn't supposed to be there and isn't part of the games design,
if it's not part of a game's intended design then patching it is necessary,
they did say before the past zones came out that the bugs would get patched.

and some of us enjoy a game more when it is less broken than before.

They have changed a lot of the game I admit, yes. Though I disagree with them canceling Retro because I'd rather have a game rather than no game, your opinion is subjective to you and maybe a few others but there are a ton of people who have not been to the unknown nor do they care for it and would be upset if the game were completely canceled.

I personally have played the original and been to the unknown but I don't really mind that it has been blocked-off from us and then again that is subjective to me just like your statement is subjective to you.

I would disagree with cancelling Fusionfall Retro as well, regardless of whether the "out of bounds" areas of the in-game world were accessible or not. It's not fair to the developers who put X amount of years into redeveloping and prepping the game to go back online, and it's also unfair to the hundreds of players who put several hours into grinding for items and level.

if Fusionfall Retro were to be cancelled, we would have no way of playing this game again unless another group of techies came along and put the game back online. It's not like a Nintendo console game where you put the cartridge in and all your progress is there regardless of whether friends wish to play with you or not. MMO's work entirely different.

Even after the release of Fusionfall Legacy, I'd still feel the same way about it tbh.

tie between teen gohan(cell saga and bojack movie) and future trunks.

DBS sucks

and let's not forget that Vegeta's fight against Kid Buu was his most dangerous one in Z, as his spirit could've been erased from existence if Kid Buu had killed him while Vegeta had the halo above his head.

Kid Buu was both a threat to the world of the living and Other World.
This is why the Kai's used the Namekian dragon Porunga to help Goku and Vegeta win their fight against Buu on Vegeta's orders, they knew that the spirit bomb was their only chance of victory.

FusionFall Retro Discussion / Re: How much unused items are in the files?
« on: January 26, 2019, 08:14:49 AM »
Probably much more than we know.

Devan said deep in the server that maps for the removed areas in FusionFalls canceled expansion so using that logic, there could be a bunch of unknown unused items.

For items that haven't been released in Retro, off the top of my head I can think of the Scooby-Doo Tail Devan mentioned once.
I thought they couldn't use anything from Hanna-Barbera.
Not true. They can do anything they want when it comes down to it, but the shows really have to fit in the spirit of the original game. Devan has previously stated that, outside of MAYBE Scooby-Doo, he canít guarantee that any of those properties really qualify. However, the fact that the original developers once intended to incorporate a Scooby Tail gives me some hope for the future.

Don't forget that when you did those totem pole missions, if you look closely, you can see Hannah-Barbara characters such as Scooby Doo.

I believe I've mentioned something about this before, Scooby Doo being from Hanna Barbera studios (but is a copyright of Warner) and how it would've been cool to have him and the gang in Fusionfall, they could've had their own exclusive missions, and it is a shame that he never got put in a Fusionfall expansion.

Scooby Doo would fit the setting of Fusionfall quite well, because Mystery Inc's detective skills would be useful to the other heroes of Fusionfall. Contrary to The Flintstones or Jetsons, who are supposed to be in different time periods, so including them would be unfitting.

According to Google search I looked up, the story of The Jetsons was supposed to be in year 2062 (fictional)
where as the Flintstones were obviously in prehistoric era or when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

if Fusionfall Retro's story was in that year of the Jetsons, then wouldn't Dexter, Mandark, the Powerpuff Girls and the others be old? not like it matters that much because it's just cartoon characters.

But out of Hanna Barbera's other mythos, Scooby Doo and Mystery Inc are the only ones I can think of who would make sense to add to the game, either as an expansion to OG Fusionfall, or in Fusionfall Legacy.

So the vehicles are more expensive than the birthday bash ones but they are slower?

This has been the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever.

even worse that they're rentals and you don't get to keep them.
That's just poor design imo, which I hope gets corrected in FFL.

There are other ways they could've balanced the game if you could keep them, like if your vehicle got damaged you had to pay taros to repair it or it wouldn't move as quickly, and only by upgrades or stealth nanos could you hide your vehicle from fusion monsters.

Have you tried reinstalling the game several times?

You shouldn't have to reinstall the game "several times" just to make it work properly though.
If it didn't work the 1st or second time, then there's obviously something wrong with the game or the server it is running on.

I would suggest reporting this issue to the developers so they can fix the issue
and that's if it isn't a client side issue.

44
You mean the FFR launcher?? as Slavin mentioned it does it automatically after you install the application.

and I can confirm it did the same for me when I installed mine on my laptop,
then all you require is your sign in ID and password and you're good to go
it's straight forward and intentionally made simple.

Nice, and you're level 36.

One thing you can't do in Fusionfall Retro, is explore the inside of the city buildings.
You can only enter buildings inside of Infected Zones or the KND treehouse in Sector V.

Just seems wasted potential, for what could have been used for marts, missions and perhaps even train stations.
Hopefully Fusionfall Legacy will rectify all these flaws and include a higher level cap.
