FusionFall Retro’s Future, 2020, and Expansion

Before anything else, I want to give a huge thanks to those who have supported us and continue to support us! Without the players, none of us would even think this would be possible. I speak for everyone on the team when I say thank you so much!

So Far…
Over this past year, we’ve had quite a few updates, seasonal events, permanent content updates, brand new vehicles, and a whole bunch of other stuff. We’ve been figuring out technical things as well, with brand new textures, model porting from later versions of the game, world editing, model imports, and everything we really could have dreamed in order to update the game as we see fit. Things have been going well on that front, and while we don’t want to slow down on permanent content updates, we’ve had some ideas for more ambitious updates and content…

New Levels, Nanos, and Areas
Expansion! You read that correctly, we want to expand the game with more levels, new Nanos, and even brand new areas, monsters, and characters! With everything we’ve learned over the past year, we’re confident it can be done, and we’ve made some plans to gear up and work toward the release of our first expansion.

Our Plans
You may be wondering exactly what we’re planning for our very first expansion. We’re not looking to reinvent the wheel, and in a way, we just want to kind of dip our feet in the water and get a feel for getting over some of the challenges we expect to face when developing it. We’ve already laid out an internal road map and gotten to work on some of the logistics, but here’s a taste of what you can expect.

  • Four additional levels
    • Fully featured with missions, monsters, and items
  • Four additional Nanos
    • Including Flapjack and Johnny Bravo from the original game
  • Two brand new areas
    • With two additional Infected Zones
  • More than ten new character NPCs
    • Including some characters from series not currently featured in Retro

This isn’t a super massive expansion, and that’s done on purpose. We want to be able to develop this smaller expansion and effectively prove it can be done before we wind up breaking off more than we can chew. Should we pull this off with relative ease and success, it would be reasonable to expect more expansions down the line, with possibly more levels, nanos, areas, characters, etc. than before.

However, the development of this expansion is going to be something we’ve never done before, and it’s going to be a lot of work. As a result, we’d like to slow down with regular content updates and events in order to better focus our efforts on making the expansion. There may still be updates here and there, and there may even be new content updates that tie into the expansion as we make it, but in large, they will be less frequent and feature a bit less content.

What's Next?
Don’t fret! We’ve been developing the previously teased Time Squad update for some time now, and though it has been delayed a bit, we’re still planning to pour everything we have into it to make sure it fits in just like our previous updates. We also have a smaller content update planned to be made alongside the expansion and released sometime before it, both to tie in some plotlines and help keep the game active with new updates.

We’d also like to change things up a bit and occasionally provide devblogs featuring a sample of what you can expect to see in the expansion, like new monsters, new characters, snippets of areas and mission plotlines. We’d also like to tear down some of the development process and basically show off how some of the stuff works and how it’s made and implemented into the game, along with common issues we may experience and how we deal with them. Expect to see some of these devblogs moving forward!

We’re hoping everyone understands and is excited for this new direction we plan to take Retro. It may be some time before we’re able to show anything off, and we’re expecting a relatively long development cycle for the expansion, but we’re hoping you’ll hang in there! We’re eager to get this in your hands!
